Rugged lace is one of my favourite terms, and I like to use it often when describing lace that isn’t…lacey! The lace panel detail on the back of these mitts weaves in and out, in an interpretation of the gentle soundwaves of the squeaking the rounded grains of quartz make on Squeaky Beach as you walk along.
These fingerless mitts are knit by holding two subtly tonal shades of Isager Tvinni together throughout. They have inherent loft and warmth in the fabric as a result, as well as a beautiful heathered appearance. If you’d prefer, they can of course also be knit monochromatically, or with a higher contrast.
Yarn : Isager Tvinni 50g/256m (held double throughout)
Needles : 3.5mm and 3.75mm set of dpns or 100cm circular (for magic loop)
Gauge: 11.5sts/16rows = 5cm, over stocking stitch
Finished Size: Small (16.5cm width); Large (18cm width)

A long, heavily-textured cowl knit using two skeins of the classic Cascade 220 worsted yarn.
The simple yet effective combinations of knit and purl stitches form a richly textured surface reminiscent of rockpools. It can be worn draped but is also generous enough to double over, and sit snugly against the neck.
This pattern is charted, and requires knowledge of provisional cast-ons and Kitchener stitch or grafting.
Yarn: Cascade 220 worsted - 2 skeins (440yds/402metres)
Needles: 4.5mm or size required to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 24st/26rows = 10cm, over pattern
Finished size: 21cm width x 122cm circumference

Inspired by the surf beach of my teens, this close-fitting beanie is a light but warm hat knit with two strands of Shibui yarn held together throughout to form a foamy, marled fabric for the main body. A pop of bright contrast adds that detail and texture I love, and the finished piece is topped off with a perky pompom.
This beanie comes in two sizes – small or large – and can be worn with negative ease (as intended) or with a little more slouch if that’s your preference. Perfect for the surfer in your life who wants to keep their ears warm and the ocean wind out of their hair.
Yarn: Shibui Pebble (205m/25g) & Cima (300m/50g)
Needles: 3.5mm dpns or 100cm circular needle (for magic loop)
Gauge: 27sts/34rows = 10cm over chevron pattern
Size: Small - 37cm (to fit 52-54cm), Large - 40cm (to fit 55-57cm)
